Saint Joan

Shaw's play Saint Joan has much to say about war, show trials and varieties of fanaticism.

Why see Saint Joan?
Extended through October!
Shaw Festival's lauded production of Saint Joan, Bernard Shaw's 1923 chronicle play has been extended to October! Starring Sara Topham as the country girl with the voices in her head, we are invited to explore whether or not Joan is the holy chosen one by God as she claims to be, or a deranged peasant with delusions of grandeur? Follow the journey of the famous teenaged female knight as she leads French forces against the English in holy war to recapture the city of Orleans, only to be condemned as a witch and burned at the stake for her troubles.
Mourn her fate as we watch a never-ending chain of military, religious and monarchical men, convinced by her visions, find rational reasons to support her in her leadership, only to abandon her to the Inquisition and the English, once the city has been taken, and she has outlived her usefulness. This searing and provocative drama was ahead of its time during the Twenties, and provided a proto-feminist view to her plight.
